Sea

Tuscany distinguishes itself because of the alternation of rocky beaches and long soft sandy beaches, where you may a long walk brushing against the water and admiring the panorama of the Apuan Alps.

You will find different beach resorts (on payment, possibility to book) along the coast as also free beaches, more widespread in Marina di Vecchiano, Torre del Lago and the area of Livorno. “The Versilia Coast” is well-known for its beach resorts provided with all sorts of comfort – you may rent a sun-umbrella and deckchairs, have a hot shower, have a swim in a salted swimming pool. There is a big selection of bars, restaurants and shops along the beach promenade. Have an aperitif while sunset or dinner on the beach with the sound of the waves, a stroll on the various jetties or go shopping till late at night – shops are open from June to September till midnight.

We discover a different landscape in the south of Tuscany, with an alternation of high rocky coasts to low and sandy ones. There are various activities for sea lovers such as diving, snorkelling, sports fishing, kitesurf, surf and sailing.

The coast in Livorno and Castiglioncello is rocky where in Rosignano the long gold sandy beaches start to be, going more south you will find renowned beaches such as Castagneto Carducci, Castiglione della Pescaia and Punta Ala – spots which were selected by poets and writers because of its stunning glimpses.

An alternative program could be to spend your day with your kids or friends at the Acquapark in Follonica, a well-equipped aquatic park, formed of pools with slides, kamikaze and last but not least relaxing areas with waterfalls and whirlpools.

Cinque Terre – 1 day

Riomaggiore, Manarola, Corniglia, Vernazza and Monterosso al Mare – became UNESCO heritage – composed of rocky hamlets and surrounded by the sea, famous because of their stunning views with a large and fabulous number of sites, located in the province of La Spezia, region of the Liguria. Spots loved by poets and writers, font of inspiration thanks to the colours and the suggestive sites. We highly recommend to take the train for this excursion, because of a lack of parking. It is possible to travel from the 25th March till 5th November 5 „Terre Express “(99 trains per day, 7 days a week, every 15 minutes). The ticket is valid for the whole day – gives you the opportunity to get off or get in all the hamlets, as the 5 villages are disposed in a line. There is a boat (only from June till August) for an alternative departing from Viareggio, which stops in all the 5 hamlets (Cinque Terre) – a bit more expensive than the train but you have the charm to arrive from the sea side, caressed by the wind.

The park of the Cinque Terre has numerous itineraries for trekking and hiking tours. Sea lovers will have the chance to swim, to do snorkelling or scuba diving or to practice other maritime activities. If you are experienced explorers the Cinque Terre are a perfect destination for kayaking through caverns and waterfalls enabling to discover hidden spots.
